When You Hear or Read God’s Word, What Questions Should You Ask Yourself?

As Christians, we are listeners of sacred stories. God’s gifts of reason, imagination, creativity, and critical thinking are guided and enlightened by His Word.

In fact, the story of salvation in Jesus dying and resurrection is the greatest of all stories told.

And as we read or hear the Bible scriptures and stories, there are a few questions we can ask ourselves….

Is this a history book, a psalm, or a proverb?

Is it the gospels, an epistle, maybe one of Jesus’ parables?

What words and images or imagery, metaphors?
What kind of language are the authors using?
Look and listen for that kind of beautiful, rich language.

It’s also as simple as asking yourself, in plain, simple language, what is God’s Word saying here? What do His words say? What do they mean?

And finally, when you hear God’s word, ask THIS question (And this one kind of helps train your Lutheran imagination and help hold it captive to the Word of God):

In this part of the Scripture and these words, how is God pointing me to Jesus and His dying and rising for me?

Save this post and use these questions the next time you’re reading or listening to the Bible.
