Your Sorrow Will Turn to Joy

In John 16:16-22, Jesus prepares his disciples for his upcoming departure (aka, the ascension).

He tells them, “In a little while you will see me no more, and then after a little while you will see me.”

He acknowledges they will experience grief while the world rejoices, thinking they’ve defeated Jesus and his movement.

The disciples will mourn not just the loss of their Lord, but also their close friend with whom they’ve spent years traveling and learning.

Like the disciples, we also wonder: When will Jesus return? Even Jesus admitted only the Father knows this timing. So what should we do while waiting?

It’s important to remember that Jesus didn’t abandon us when he ascended.

By returning to his Father, he can now be present in every church, every altar, and every pulpit throughout time and space.

Though we live in a broken world, our sorrow turns to joy when we gather around God’s Word and sacraments.

As we bring our sins, sorrows, and despair to Jesus, they’re taken from us, and we receive joy in return. (Even our suffering is redeemed!)

Christ’s death wasn’t his end but the beginning of the church.

Through water, we enter new life, and through imperfect pastors, God’s word reaches us.

While we eagerly await Jesus’ return, we can see, taste, and hear him whenever we gather around his Word and sacraments.

Our sorrows may return, but they will always be turned to joy.
