Do Christians Still Need to Follow Old Testament Ceremonial Law?
Now that Christ has set us free and made us heirs of salvation, what do we GET to do?
Paul says in Galatians 5:1, “For freedom, Christ has set us free. Stand firm, therefore, and do not submit again to a yoke of slavery.”
A yoke is used to keep two oxen together when dragging a plow, ensuring they move in sync. But what is the ‘yoke of slavery’?
For Christians, the yoke of slavery means being bound to something that holds you back, like the Old Testament ceremonial law.
Paul warned the Galatians that focusing on the Old Testament ceremonial law prevented them from loving and serving their neighbors.
Paul specifically addressed the circumcision party, stating that accepting circumcision as a requirement severs one from Christ.
Paul says, as Christians, we are called to love and serve our neighbors. Our freedom in Christ allows us to do this.
“The whole law is fulfilled in one word – love. You shall love your neighbor as yourself.” – Paul
We can truly love and serve our neighbor when the obligation of the law is taken away because love cannot be an obligation.
