Baptism: What’s Really Being Cleansed?

Baptism comes from this Greek word, baptizo, which means to wash.

Because that’s what baptism does.

But, what’s being washed?
What’s being cleansed?
Or better yet, WHO is being cleansed?

Well, you are.

You are being cleansed and washed.

Of both your original sin (that stuff you inherited from Adam)

But also all of your actual sins – aka those sins you commit after your baptism.

Every time you sin, after the waters of holy baptism, it’s not like you have to try to earn favor with the Father.

Nope!

You are brought back to your baptism in the words of absolution.

And you abide in that baptismal grace all the days of your earthly pilgrimage.
