Paul has the authority to command Philemon to do the right thing, but he doesn’t deal with him that way. Paul wants his relationship with Philemon to be based on love rather than power. He would prefer to simply ASK Philemon to do the right thing, for the sake of Christ. Likewise, God wants to deal with you by means of the Gospel rather than by the Law.
