Today’s Reflection: Matthew 21:1-9
Daily Lectionary: Isaiah 9:8-10:11; 1 Peter 5:1-14

And the crowds that were going before them and the ones following shouted saying, “Hosanna to the Son of David! Blessed is The One adventing in the Name of the Lord! Hosanna in the highest!” (Matthew 21:9)

In the Name + of Jesus. Amen. Jesus is coming! He is “the coming One”—the One coming in the Name of the Lord to save you. He’s your Advent King! He puts the “advent” in the Advent Season.

That’s Advent! Advent is all about Jesus coming to you! He’s coming into your flesh to be born of the Virgin Mary. He’s coming again with glory to judge the living and to condemn the dead who reject Him. He’s coming in the water, the Word, and the bread and wine to make His final judgment one of only mercy and grace for you given through His Calvary-won gifts.

He’s not coming to condemn you. He’s riding into Jerusalem to save you! He will take upon Himself all that you were, are, and will be to save you from all that you were, are, and will be. His death on the Cross is your death to sin—not just yesterday’s, or today’s, but tomorrow’s sins, too. Now you live in His resurrection unto life everlasting.

Jesus is coming. Repent of your sins. Clean up your life. Stop doing the filthy things you do—you know which ones. God knows what you hide and where you’ve hidden it. Prepare for His coming like your salvation depends upon it—because staying in your sins will certainly damn you. Turn from them. Your repenting in and of itself doesn’t save you. Jesus saves you. But refusing to repent will damn you!

Advent isn’t about you making yourself ready. It’s about Jesus coming. The only thing that can make you ready for Jesus coming on the Last Day is remembering His coming on Christmas to save you. He alone makes you ready. He delivers His coming to you in His gifts! He makes you ready by His coming!

He comes to you today, not in the clouds of heaven, but in His gifts for you in Word and Sacrament. He washes you. He absolves you. He feeds you His Body and Blood for the forgiveness of your sins. He comes and, in receiving His coming, you live forever. Receiving his gifts—that’s faith! He makes you ready for His coming by faith alone.

Advent’s here! Jesus is coming! Clothed with His Name, in your baptismal faith, you are repented of your sins and made ready by His Word of forgiveness. You make others ready for His coming with love which flows from Him. Fed by His Body and Blood, feed others with mercy and kindness. In the Name + of Jesus. Amen.
