Today’s Reading: John 15:26-16:4
Daily Lectionary: Numbers 14:1-25; Luke 18:18-34

“But when the Helper, … the Spirit of truth, who proceeds from the Father, he will bear witness about me.” (John 15:26 ESV)

In the Name + of Jesus. Amen. As we draw nearer to Pentecost, we begin to hear more and more about the Holy Spirit. We learn about who He is and what He does.

The Spirit is the One who proceeds from the Father. The Spirit constantly comes forth from the Father’s essence, like light constantly comes forth from the sun. The Father doesn’t create the Spirit. The Spirit is eternal and shares the Father’s very nature. He is One with the Father, just as the Son is One with the Father. The Spirit is truly God.

Since the Spirit proceeds from the Father eternally, it is good and proper for the Father to send the Spirit to us in time. Why does the Spirit come to us?

He comes as our second Helper. Our first Helper is Jesus, who obeyed the Law on our behalf, who was killed as a sin-offering, and who reversed death in His own flesh. He ascended into heaven, but He didn’t leave us alone. The Spirit is with us.

The Spirit helps us by giving us the truth, namely, the Gospel. The Holy Spirit is a trustworthy witness. He testifies to the Son. He testifies to who Jesus is—the Messiah, the Lord of creation, truly God and truly man, our Savior. He testifies to what Jesus has done—He has conquered sin, death, and the devil by His death and resurrection.

The Spirit testifies to Christ through people. He testifies to Christ through your pastor, your parents, and your fellow Christians. They proclaim the Gospel to you. The Gospel assures you that you have forgiveness, life, and salvation in Jesus.

That same Spirit will testify to your neighbors through you! Having heard, you will speak. Having believed, you will confess. The Spirit will testify to Jesus through you, so that others might know Him and receive His love.

The Father sends out the Spirit to bring us Jesus and to bring us back to the Father. Humbly, let us thank the Spirit for coming to us in the Gospel. In the Name + of Jesus. Amen.

Teach us to know the Father, Son, And You, from both, as Three in One That we Your name may ever bless And in our lives the truth confess. (Come, Holy Ghost, Creator Blest, LSB 498:6)
