Dean's List: God Speaks, We Confess
by Katie Hill on October 8th, 2020
By Aaron T. Fenker The Lord speaks, and we receive His Word. It's His Gift to us. We confess, (homologoumen, in the Greek, which means "say the same thing") that Word. We say what He says to us. He speaks, we listen, we speak that Word as He gave it. That's the way of faith. Faith defends our Lord's Word, employing other words at times. "I and the Father are one," (John 10:30) and "I will send fro...
Under the Cross: What's Your Tic?
by Katie Hill on September 29th, 2020
There isn't a single person in this world who has not experienced some degree of suffering that has hurt him or her emotionally and physically. There isn't a single person in this world who has not filed away in his past those things that he wishes had never happened--things that have changed his life, things that he has carried with him to the present.
Dean's List: The Law Is for You Even Now
by Katie Hill on September 24th, 2020
You are renewed. Renewed in Holy Baptism, new life is yours and the Holy Spirit is yours. Free salvation is given as a gift from God at the font (Titus 3:5). Yet you are not completely, 100% renewed in this life. If you were, you wouldn't need God's Word of Law. Not one bit! Dean's List: Faces of the Old Adam
by Katie Hill on September 10th, 2020
He's familiar. You know him all too well. And that's a bad thing--deadly, hell-worthy, even! Sounds bad, and it is! Evil, wicked, nothing good there--that's your flesh, your Old Adam.
Under the Cross: Brave New World
by Katie Hill on August 10th, 2020
As you read through this column, remember one unchanging truth: By virtue of your Holy Baptism, you are Christ's, and no matter what highs or lows you experience this next year, He is always there for you, in Word and Sacrament. Whatever your struggle is, He has taken care of your biggest challenge ever—having conquered sin, death and the devil on your behalf.

This cruciflood saves you. It washes you. It drowns your wicked Old Adam and it lifts you up in the ark of the Church. Jesus crucified for you. A cruciflood poured out for you.

The Law produces contrition, and the Gospel draws up from the water of Baptism a son of God.
Under the Cross: Baptized, Not Gay
by Katie Hill on June 9th, 2020
You are baptized! God has not abandoned you. You are not less in His sight because of your struggles against sin. He has beaten sin for you. All of the guilt, doubt and despair you may feel has been answered for on Calvary.
This Just In: Coming Together Again
by Katie Hill on May 31st, 2020
William M. Cwirla By the grace of God, many of our congregations have begun, or are planning to begin, gathering again for Divine Service. Some in urban areas are still waiting patiently on the Lord; others have been able to open again for worship. Local health restrictions can have a noticeable effect on our gathering. We may not be able to sit as close as we once did, or shake hands or hug, thou...
