Helpful Things: A Timeless Perspective on HT Conferences
by Katie Hill on March 23rd, 2021
We do worship, work, and play at HT conferences the way we do because we want nothing but the best for youth and want to help Lutheran pastors, parents, and congregations to provide it for them and keep them coming to church, where God’s gifts for us in Word and Sacrament are being given out.
Helpful Things: Fostering Confidence in Prayer
by Katie Hill on March 9th, 2021
So how do you pray on the fly? You need an outline. And you have a great one in the liturgy! The Collect of the Day--it’s that prayer before the readings that collects the thought of the service in a single sentence. It has a simple five-part outline. Learn it, and you’ll have a great outline for the next time someone says, “Would you pray for me?” Here’s how it goes.
Helpful Things: Communicate Effectively with Your Youth
by Katie Hill on February 23rd, 2021
Our events executive, Crysten Sanchez, has extensive experience working with youth in church, camp, and conference settings. She'd like to share with you some helpful communication tips to use as you seek to nurture a sense of camaraderie and cohesiveness amongst your youth.
Helpful Things: Sex, Sexuality, and Baptism
by Katie Hill on February 9th, 2021
Our culture today is saturated with sexuality. Sexuality has become all about who you love, or at least lust after. Whether it’s the idea that affirmative consent is the only boundary placed on sexuality, or that sexuality should be tied up completely in heterosexual marriage, which people ideally enter into soon after puberty, following traditional sex roles to form nuclear families with as many children as possible, or singles being encouraged to cultivate an often idolatrous desire for a spouse who will end all their loneliness… it’s all still an inappropriate emphasis on sexuality for faithful Christians. And instead of resisting this superficial worldview, churches often just repeat it using spiritual terms.
Helpful Things: Effective Fundraising Through Midweek Meals
by Katie Hill on January 26th, 2021
Scores of Lutheran churches will soon be entering into the season of Lent, prayerfully and thoughtfully, but also with anticipation because it means midweek Lenten services and meals. These can be times of sweet fellowship as they encourage a church to come together and focus on Jesus Christ and Him crucified.
Helpful Things: Fundraising Essentials FOR YOU
by Katie Hill on January 12th, 2021
Whether fundraising is one of your comfort zones, or you’ve never done it before, or maybe you’re somewhere in between, Higher Things seeks to equip you to thrive in this often challenging but rewarding aspect of youth leadership.
Helpful Things: A Church Full of Young People
by Katie Hill on December 29th, 2020
I think I’m onto something: I know that many Christians--youth included--who fade away from attending church feel no need for it. If they were more conscious of death and devil, I’m betting I’d see them at church more often.
Helpful Things: Dumb Things Adults Think about Youth
by Katie Hill on December 15th, 2020
It is amazing to me how dumb adults can be sometimes. Speaking as an adult, I can attest to this personally. But this is perhaps no more obvious than when adults try to engage in "youth ministry."
Helpful Things: Planning an Memorable Conference Road Trip
by Katie Hill on December 1st, 2020
So. . .you're planning to go to your first (or maybe your 20th!) Higher Things conference this summer. I don’t have to sell you on how great those four days of worship and catechesis are going to be. You know this, your youth know this, and we at HT are thrilled that you’re coming! But. . .have you given any thought to the before and after?
Helpful Things: Playing It Safe
by Katie Hill on November 17th, 2020
COVID times. Uncertain times. Unprecedented times. That's what everyone's email introduction says! You're still gathering with your youth group? Great! Looking for some things to do with them while also maintaining some distance? We've got you covered!
Helpful Things: Are You Ready for a Miracle?
by Katie Hill on September 1st, 2020
By Sandra Madden Since I began attending and coordinating Higher Things conferences, I've witnessed so many miracles. It's always in different cities but from pretty much the same place. I always watch it happen in the very back of the chapel--lectern side. I don't know why I stand there and rarely sit; that's just where and how I end up. The miracle is that what goes on is not supposed to happen....
Helpful Things: More Than Just Pizza or Lock-Ins
by Katie Hill on August 4th, 2020
Building or sustaining a youth program. Seems like a huge job, right? You have to consider all of the plans that go into each event and make your schedule open to actually be at all of those events, not to mention get to know and invest yourself in the lives of multiple different youth. Big job--but oh, so rewarding. And when you start to break down some of the important things to know about it all, it seems just a little more manageable.
Helpful Things: Get Your Youth Talking!
by Katie Hill on July 10th, 2020
Get your youth talking! Their mental health may depend on it. Forgive the obviousness of this statement but there are a lot of scary events going on in the world right now! We are dealing with a global pandemic, racial tension and rioting, contentious politicking, and a frightening economic forecast. Now try to imagine going through all of the major physical and mental development that occurs during the teenage years at the same time. Sounds pretty stressful, doesn't it?
Helpful Things: Spilling the Tea on Generation Z
by Katie Hill on June 16th, 2020
You don't have to struggle with your identity. You know who you are; you know Whose you are. In your Baptism, God has given you new life. He has forgiven your sins. He has made you who you are by showing you Whose you are. You are one who has been bought by Christ the crucified.
Helpful Things: I Have a Confession to Make
by Sandra Madden on May 27th, 2020
I strongly believe we've done our youth a disservice by treating them as children. They're young adults and they're not looking for dumbed down theology that lacks substance. They want to learn about Jesus Christ and Him crucified. They not only want, but they need to hear the Gospel. They want to be treated like adults, and in this regard, Higher Things promises to do that and delivers.
