Dean's List: God's Plan for You
by Katie Hill on April 16th, 2021
There's no dream destiny that God has planned for you that you might miss out on. So many Christians out there struggle with finding out God's plan.

Lent 1 - Supplement to the Reflections
by HT Content on February 26th, 2021
Harrison Goodman Hi, I’m Pastor Goodman and this is the Assistant to the Dean’s List. We are taking a walk through our daily Reflections here at Higher Things, to help guide you as you reflect upon the gifts of Law and Gospel this Lenten season. We are in the first week of Lent, beginning with the first Sunday in Lent, which is called “Invocabit.” It’s a fancy Latin word, from the first part of th...
Welcome to Lent - Supplement to the Reflections
by HT Content on February 17th, 2021
Lent is about a God who would dare to die for us sinners, for you. Lent is about the Cross. Because something happened on that cross. All of those sins that we’re so ashamed of were hung on Jesus. All of the pains that leave us lying in the fetal position were borne by Him. All of the wrath of God, who hates seeing the things that we have done to ourselves and each other, well that was put on Christ.
Dean's List: Called to Serve
by Katie Hill on February 5th, 2021
You are a child of God. You are a saint. You are spotless, blameless, and holy before your heavenly Father. You have the Spirit. You no longer live, but Christ lives in you, who loved you and gave Himself for you (Galatians 2:20). All of these truths together mean one thing: you are baptized.
Dean's List: Jesus Hits the Spot!
by Katie Hill on January 22nd, 2021
We need something more than personal preferences. We need more direction in life than just what we feel hits the spot. The account of the 10 lepers in Luke 17 is like a map or a signpost--something objective--that shows us that it’s not a matter of “what hits the spot?” but rather “who marks the spot?” And all the movement in our text--and there’s a lot of it--actually makes it easy to figure it out. There’s only one Target, one Spot, one Person it all revolves around: Jesus.
Dean's List: The Catechism Really Is for You
by Katie Hill on January 8th, 2021
Theology, the study of God revealed to us in Jesus Christ, isn’t just for pastors or really smart people. You started to do that in catechism class. There you skimmed the surface of the Christian faith, but what does it take to really dive deep? Well, beyond reading your Scriptures, it’s really no different than the book you used in class--the Small Catechism!
Dean's List: Jesus Is Your Peace
by Katie Hill on December 25th, 2020
No, you don’t find peace. No one does. Not true peace, that is. The truth is the Christmas season’s Good News isn’t peace on earth that we have to make happen. The truth is Peace finds you because Peace is a Person.

Merry Christmas from Higher Things!
Advent 4 Supplement to the Reflections
by HT Content on December 18th, 2020
That's our comfort, and our joy this Christmas season. That our Lord isn't just born. That's not very comforting. He's born, well, FOR YOU! And He's born for you, to die FOR YOU.
Advent 3 Dean's List Supplement to the Reflections
by Sandra Madden on December 11th, 2020
Our joy in the Lord is such that He always gives. And our joy… well, what do we do when our joy runs out?
Advent 2 - Dean's List Supplement to the Reflections
by Sandra Madden on December 4th, 2020
While we were still sinners, He sent His Son to die for us. And that's the true sign of who we are. Jesus of Nazareth, the King of the Jews, King of Zion. That Jesus is our King. He became our King when He brought us out of the domain of darkness into his own kingdom in the waters of Holy Baptism.
Advent 1 - Dean's List Supplement to the Reflections
by Sandra Madden on November 27th, 2020
Advent. "Ad Te Levavi" It's all together. It's all about Jesus coming to get you...to save you! To get you out of your lost estate so that you would come, you would come into His kingdom, forever and ever.

Dean's List: The End Is Near!
by Katie Hill on November 20th, 2020
Within our current age and culture--as it might be with every age--the end and meaning of human existence is defined within ourselves. But, waves, earthquakes, and hurricanes come and disrupt the world's perceived order of things--boats are rocked, towers fall down, and houses are blown away. All these things show that creation itself is groaning, waiting, and crying out, "The end is near!"
Dean's List: The Immeasurable Mercy of God
by Katie Hill on November 6th, 2020
So what's the Father pouring forth? What does He unendingly give? What overflows? Well, He's merciful and compassionate so He's pouring forth His not-judging, His not-condemning, His pardoning, and His giving. And you can sum that all up in one word: forgiveness. That forgiveness is in His Son Jesus--in His death and resurrection.
Dean's List: God Speaks, We Confess
by Katie Hill on October 8th, 2020
By Aaron T. Fenker The Lord speaks, and we receive His Word. It's His Gift to us. We confess, (homologoumen, in the Greek, which means "say the same thing") that Word. We say what He says to us. He speaks, we listen, we speak that Word as He gave it. That's the way of faith. Faith defends our Lord's Word, employing other words at times. "I and the Father are one," (John 10:30) and "I will send fro...
Dean's List: The Law Is for You Even Now
by Katie Hill on September 24th, 2020
You are renewed. Renewed in Holy Baptism, new life is yours and the Holy Spirit is yours. Free salvation is given as a gift from God at the font (Titus 3:5). Yet you are not completely, 100% renewed in this life. If you were, you wouldn't need God's Word of Law. Not one bit! If you were completely free from sin, you wouldn't need any teaching, admonishing, urging, driving, force, or compulsion from God's Word of Law.
Dean's List: Faces of the Old Adam
by Katie Hill on September 10th, 2020
He's familiar. You know him all too well. And that's a bad thing--deadly, hell-worthy, even! Sounds bad, and it is! Evil, wicked, nothing good there--that's your flesh, your Old Adam.
Dean's List: Sola Scriptura--All About Jesus
by Katie Hill on August 27th, 2020
When it comes to the Solas, Sola Scriptura is a fundamental one. After all, it's in Scripture that God tells us that we are saved by grace alone and by faith alone.
Dean's List: Your Suffering God
by Katie Hill on August 13th, 2020
But Jesus doesn't just deal with death from the outside, like a doctor who heals his patients, though Jesus is the Great Physician. No, Jesus gets His hands dirty.
Dean's List: Baptized, Ready to Die
by Katie Hill on July 30th, 2020
That's what you’ve been baptized into: God's crucifixion and death--God's resurrection. Those are now your crucifixion and death--your resurrection. They can't be taken from you. There's nothing that the world, the devil, or even your own conscience can say to take that from you.
Dean's List: Your Vote Is a Gift for your Neighbor
by Katie Hill on July 16th, 2020
Aaron T. Fenker Politics is all about power. Who has it. Who wants it. Who should have it. Who shouldn't have it. Who we want to have it. Who we don't want to have it. That's just the nature of things in this life. Politics are embodied in the civil authorities, and that's always a power game. It always has been. Kings, queens, emperors, pharaohs, presidents, prime ministers--whatever titles we gi...
Dean's List: Your Permanent Record
by Katie Hill on July 2nd, 2020
But your name is there, dear saint of God. We're "engraved on the palms of My hands," the Lord says, His nail-scarred hands. You're named with God's own Name--Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. Your permanent record is the record He won for you.
Dean's List: You're Covered on Judgment Day
by Katie Hill on June 18th, 2020
Judgment Day is coming. It is! You can't escape it. Yes, there is a Last Day--a day when all good things will continue and begin for you, dear Christian. There's nothing that you can do. Jesus has already done it all.
Dean's List: Jesus Ain't Done Yet
by Katie Hill on June 4th, 2020
Jesus ain’t done yet. He’s not. Sometimes we think He is, though. We think: Jesus died, Jesus rose, and Jesus ascended. Done deal. Work completed. He does say, “It is finished” on the Cross, after all.
