Guidelines for Writers

Hey!  I want to write for the Higher Things website!

Great!  We want to read your submissions!  Please follow the guidelines below to submit articles for publication on the Higher Things website.

The Higher Things website is an interactive portal dedicated to enriching the faith of Lutheran teens. Higher Things editors are happy to accept unsolicited articles.  Authors should focus on God’s work in Christ for salvation and how the Gospel message can be applied to young people’s lives. Theological articles should have a proper balance of Law and Gospel. The Higher Things website has been described as "Christian freedom meeting the internet." Our focus is and continues to be Christ and His work for mankind.

Tips for Writers

  • Articles should not exceed a word count of 750-1,000 words.

  • Shorter is usually better.

  • Consider your audience. This magazine is geared toward youth in general and teenagers specifically. Write to the quiet fourteen-year-old computer nerd, to the outgoing seventeen-year-old football player, or to the troubled nineteen-year-old ready to leave for college.

  • Keep your writing exciting and fresh. Also, pay attention to your vocabulary. You don’t need to use big words to explain complicated concepts.

To Submit an Article

  • Proofread your article.

  • If you’re over one thousand words, keep editing.

  • Provide complete contact information. (address, phone number, and email address)

  • Write a credit line at the end of the piece. Please give a brief description of yourself, and don’t forget to include your e-mail address in case readers want to contact you.

  • E-mail your submission (and any questions you might have) to Pr. Rich Heinz, the Higher Things Website Editor. Once the editorial team has had a chance to review the piece, you'll receive an e-mail saying the article has been chosen for publication. We may not always be able to tell you when your article is scheduled to be posted at that time, but we will notify you with notice once it is scheduled.

  • Higher Things Website Editors  reserve the right to edit manuscripts as the editorial team determines best.
