Reflections for the season of Trinity for 2010.
Make me to know your ways, O Lord; teach me your paths. Lead me in your truth and teach me, for you are the God of my salvation; for you I wait all the day long.” (Psalms 25:4-5)
“He who testifies to these things says, ‘Surely I am coming soon.’ Amen. Come, Lord Jesus!” (Revelation 22:20)
“And the city has no need of sun or moon to shine on it, for the glory of God gives it light, and its lamp is the Lamb. By its light will the nations walk, and the kings of the earth will bring their glory into it, and its gates will never be shut by day—and there will be no night there.” (Revelation 21:23-25)

For as the lightning that flashes out of one part under heaven shines to the other part under heaven, so also Son of Man will be in his day. But first He must suffer many things and be rejected by this generation. (Luke 17:24-25)
Who can bring a clean thing out of an unclean? No one! (Job 14:4)
Likewise you younger people, submit yourselves to your elders. Yes, all of you be submissive to one another, and be clothed with humility, for “God resists the proud, But gives grace to the humble.” Therefore humble yourselves under the mighty hand of God, that He may exalt you in due time. For if we believe that Jesus died and rose again, even so, God will bring with Him those who sleep in Jesus. (1 Thessalonians 4:14)
So the LORD relented from the harm which He said He would do to His people. (Exodus 32:14)
“For false christs and false prophets will rise and show great signs and wonders to deceive, if possible, even the elect.” (Matthew 24:24)
Be of good courage, and He shall strengthen your heart, all you who hope in the Lord. (Psalm 31:24, from the Introit for the Third-Last Sunday)
He who has begun a good work in you will complete it until the day of Jesus Christ. (Philippians 1:6)
[W]hat does the Lord require of you but to do justly, to love mercy, and to walk humbly with your God? (Micah 6:8)
And you, masters, do the same things to them, giving up threatening, knowing that your own Master also is in heaven, and there is no partiality with Him. (Ephesians 6:9; The Table of Duties; To Employers and Supervisors)
Then Peter came up to Him and said, “Lord, how often shall my brother sin against me, and I forgive him? Up to seven times?” Jesus said to him, “I do not say to you up to seven times, but up to seventy times seven.” (Matthew 18:21-22)
Blessed are you when they revile and persecute you and say all kinds of evil against you falsely for My sake. Rejoice and be exceedingly glad, for great is your reward in heaven, for so they persecuted the prophets who were before you. (Matthew 5:11-12)

And now, Israel, what does the LORD your God require of you, but to fear the LORD your God, to walk in all His ways and to love Him, to serve the LORD your God with all your heart and with all your soul, and to keep the commandments of the LORD and His statutes which I command you today for your good. "On these two commandments hang all the Law and the Prophets." (Matthew 22:40)
I was glad when they said to me, "Let us go into the house of the LORD."

A word fitly spoken is like apples of gold In settings of silver. (Proverbs 25:11)
Then He answered them, saying, "Which of you, having a donkey or an ox that has fallen into a pit, will not immediately pull him out on the Sabbath day?" (Luke 14:5)

Nevertheless in Your great mercy You did not utterly consume them nor forsake them; For You are God, gracious and merciful. (Nehemiah 9:31)

For the flesh lusts against the Spirit, and the Spirit against the flesh; and these are contrary to one another, so that you do not do the things that you wish.But if you are led by the Spirit, you are not under the law. (Galatians 5:17-18).
But the path of the just is like the shining sun, That shines ever brighter unto the perfect day. (Proverbs 4:18)
And He said to him, "Arise, go your way. Your faith has made you well." Luke 17: 19
How lovely is Your tabernacle, O LORD of hosts!My soul longs, yes, even faints For the courts of the LORD; My heart and my flesh cry out for the living God. (Psalm 84:1-2 from the Introit for Trinity 14)
"Yet I have reserved seven thousand in Israel, all whose knees have not bowed to Baal, and every mouth that has not kissed him." (1 Kings 19:18)
And this I say, that the law, which was four hundred and thirty years later, cannot annul the covenant that was confirmed before by God in Christ, that it should make the promise of no effect. (Galatians 3:17)

Then the men who were designated by name rose up and took the captives, and from the spoil they clothed all who were naked among them, dressed them and gave them sandals, gave them food and drink, and anointed them; and they let all the feeble ones ride on donkeys. So they brought them to their brethren at Jericho, the city of palm trees. Then they returned to Samaria. (2 Chronicles 28:15)
Then [Jesus] turned to His disciples and said privately, "Blessed are the eyes which see the things you see; for I tell you that many prophets and kings have desired to see what you see, and have not seen it, and to hear what you hear, and have not heard it." (Luke 10:23-24
But when Herod heard, he said, "This is John, whom I beheaded; he has been raised from the dead!" (Mark 6:16)
Remember Your congregation, which You have purchased of old, The tribe of Your inheritance, which You have redeemed -- This Mount Zion where You have dwelt.(Psalm 74:2 from the Introit for Trinity 13)
How then shall they call on Him in whom they have not believed? And how shall they believe in Him of whom they have not heard? And how shall they hear without a preacher? (Romans 10:14)
Not that we are sufficient of ourselves to think of anything as being from ourselves, but our sufficiency is from God (2 Corinthians 3:5)
Who receives this sacrament worthily?
Now there was also a dispute among them, as to which of them should be considered the greatest. (Luke 22:24)
The humble also shall increase their joy in the LORD, And the poor among men shall rejoice In the Holy One of Israel. (Isaiah 29:19)
And He took him aside from the multitude, and put His fingers in his ears, and He spat and touched his tongue. (Mark 7:33)
Make haste, O God, to deliver me! Make haste to help me, O LORD! (Psalm 70:1 from the Introit for Trinity 12)
And you He made alive, who were dead in trespasses and sins, (Ephesians 2:1)
After that He was seen by over five hundred brethren at once, of whom the greater part remain to the present, but some have fallen asleep. (1 Corinthians 15:6)
How can bodily eating and drinking do such great things? Certainly not just eating and drinking do these things, but the words written here: "Given and shed for you for the forgiveness of sins." These words, along with the bodily eating and drinking, are the main thing in the Sacrament. Whoever believes these words has exactly what they say: "forgiveness of sins." (Small Catechism, the Sacrament of the Altar)
Abel also brought of the firstborn of his flock and of their fat. And the LORD respected Abel and his offering, but He did not respect Cain and his offering. And Cain was very angry, and his countenance fell. (Genesis 4:4-5)
"The Pharisee stood and prayed thus with himself, 'God, I thank You that I am not like other men—extortioners, unjust, adulterers, or even as this tax collector. (Luke 18:11)
Then she spoke out with a loud voice and said, “Blessed are you among women, and blessed is the fruit of your womb! (Luke 1:42)
Let God arise, Let His enemies be scattered; Let those also who hate Him flee before Him. (Psalm 68:1 from the Introit for Trinity 11)
For Christ is the end of the law for righteousness to everyone who believes. (Romans 10:4)
Will you steal, murder, commit adultery, swear falsely, burn incense to Baal, and walk after other gods whom you do not know,"and then come and stand before Me in this house which is called by My name, and say, 'We are delivered to do all these abominations'? (Jeremiah 7:9-1)
What is the benefit of this eating and drinking?
Therefore I make known to you that no one speaking by the Spirit of God calls Jesus accursed, and no one can say that Jesus is Lord except by the Holy Spirit. (1 Corinthians 12:3)
Why has this people slidden back, Jerusalem, in a perpetual backsliding? They hold fast to deceit, they refuse to return.
"For days will come upon you when your enemies will build an embankment around you, surround you and close you in on every side, and level you, and your children within you, to the ground; and they will not leave in you one stone upon another, because you did not know the time of your visitation." (Luke 19:43-44)
Cast your burden on the LORD, And He shall sustain you; (Psalm 55:22 from the Introit for Trinity 10)
So when they had appointed him a day, many came to him at his lodging, to whom he explained and solemnly testified of the kingdom of God, persuading them concerning Jesus from both the Law of Moses and the Prophets, from morning till evening. (Acts 28:23)
But when Paul had gathered a bundle of sticks and laid them on the fire, a viper came out because of the heat, and fastened on his hand.So when the natives saw the creature hanging from his hand, they said to one another, "No doubt this man is a murderer, whom, though he has escaped the sea, yet justice does not allow to live." But he shook off the creature into the fire and suffered no harm. (Acts 28:3-5)
Our Lord Jesus Christ, on the night when He was betrayed, took bread, and when He had given thanks, He broke it and gave it to the disciples and said: "Take, eat; this is My body, which is given for you. This do in
No temptation has overtaken you except such as is common to man; but God is faithful, who will not allow you to be tempted beyond what you are able, but with the temptation will also make the way of escape, that you may be able to bear it. (1 Corinthians 10:13)
With the merciful You will show Yourself merciful; With a blameless man You will show Yourself blameless;With the pure You will show Yourself pure; And with the devious You will show Yourself shrewd. (2 Samuel 22:26-27)
"No servant can serve two masters; for either he will hate the one and love the other, or else he will be loyal to the one and despise the other. You cannot serve God and mammon." (Luke 16:13)

“Therefore take heed to yourselves and to all the flock, among which the Holy Spirit has made you overseers, to shepherd the church of God which He purchased with His own blood.” (Acts 20:28)
For if you live according to the flesh you will die; but if by the Spirit you put to death the deeds of the body, you will live. (Romans 8:13)
What is the Sacrament of the Altar? It is the true body and blood of our Lord Jesus Christ under the bread and wine, instituted by Christ Himself for us Christians to eat and to drink. (Small Catechism, the Sacrament of the Altar)
Thus says the LORD of hosts: "Do not listen to the words of the prophets who prophesy to you. They make you worthless; They speak a vision of their own heart, Not from the mouth of the LORD. (Jeremiah 23:16)
Beware of false prophets, who come to you in sheep's clothing, but inwardly they are ravenous wolves."You will know them by their fruits. Do men gather grapes from thornbushes or figs from thistles? (Matthew 7:15-16)
Now about that time Herod the king stretched out his hand to harass some from the church.Then he killed James the brother of John with the sword. (Acts 12:1-2)

So the word of the Lord grew mightily and prevailed. (Acts 19:20)
Jesus said to her, "Mary!" She turned and said to Him, "Rabboni!" (which is to say, Teacher). (John 20:16)
What do you believe according to these words? I believe that when the called ministers of Christ deal with us by His divine command, in particular when they exclude openly unrepentant sinners from the Christian congregation and absolve those who repent of their sins and want to do better, this is just as valid and certain ,even in heaven, as if Christ our dear Lord dealt with us Himself. (Small Catechism, The Office of the Keys)
What fruit did you have then in the things of which you are now ashamed? For the end of those things is death. But now having been set free from sin, and having become slaves of God, you have your fruit to holiness, and the end, everlasting life. (Romans 6:21-22)
And the LORD God commanded the man, saying, "Of every tree of the garden you may freely eat;"but of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil you shall not eat, for in the day that you eat of it you shall surely die." (Genesis 2:16-17)
I have compassion on the multitude, because they have now continued with Me three days and have nothing to eat. (Mark 8:2)
All you peoples, clap your hands! Shout to God with the sound of joyful triumph! (Psalm 47:1)

“What is confession? Confession has two parts, first that we confess our sins and second that we receive absolution, that is forgiveness, not doubting but firmly believing that by it our sins are forgiven before God in heaven.” (The Small Catechism)
“And Simon Peter answered, ‘You are the Christ, the Son of the Living God.’”
“When Joseph's brothers saw that their father was dead, they said, ‘It may be that Joseph will hold a grudge against us and certainly pay us back for all for all the evil that we did to him.” (Genesis 50:15)
“Be merciful, as your heavenly Father is merciful. Judge not and you will not be judged; condemn not and you will not be condemned; forgive and you will be forgiven.” (St. Luke 6:36-37)
The Lord is my light and my salvation; whom shall I fear? The Lord is the strength of my life; of whom shall I be afraid? (Psalm 27:1)
But the father said to His servants, “Bring quickly the best robe, and put it on him, and put a ring on his hand, and shoes on his feet.” (St. Luke 15:22)
And you, child, will be called the prophet of the Most High, for you will go before the Lord to prepare His ways, to give knowledge of salvation to His people in the forgiveness of their sins. (St. Luke 1:76-77)
What does such baptizing with water indicate? It indicates that the Old Adam in us should by daily contrition and repentance be drowned and die with all sins and evil desires, and that a new man should daily emerge and arise to live before God in righteousness and purity forever.(Small Catechism, Baptism)
But I received mercy for this reason, that in me, as the foremost, Jesus Christ might display his perfect patience as an example to those who were to believe in him for eternal life. (1 Timothy 1:16)
Who is a God like You, pardoning iniquity and passing over transgression for the remnant of his inheritance? He does not retain His anger forever, because He delights in steadfast love. (Micah 7:18)
And the Pharisees and the scribes grumbled, saying, “This man receives sinners and eats with them.” (St. Luke 15:2)
Turn to me and be gracious to me, for I am lonely and afflicted. (Psalm 25:16, Introit for Trinity 3)
And this is eternal life, that they know you, the only true God, and Jesus Christ whom you have sent. (John 17:3)
Little children, let us not love in word or speech but in deed and truth. (1 John 3:18).
How can water do such great things? Answer: Certainly not just water, but the Word of God in and with the water does these things, along with the faith which trusts this Word of God in the water. For without God’s Word the water is plain water and no Baptism. What benefits does Baptism give? Answer: It works forgiveness of sins, rescues from death and the devil, and gives eternal salvation to all who believe this, as the words and promises of God declare (Small Catechism).
