August 31, 2008 - The 15th Sunday after Trinity

Today's Reading: Matthew 6:24-34

Daily Lectionary: 1 Kings 16:29-17:24; 2 Corinthians 9:1-15

Therefore I say to you, do not worry about your life, what you will eat or what you will drink; nor about your body, what you will put on. Is not life more than food and the body more than clothing? (Matthew 6:25)

In the Name + of Jesus. Amen. Jesus is telling us that our Father in heaven will not let us go naked or starve! And He doesn't! In the waters of Holy Baptism, the Father clothes us with Jesus Himself, Christ's own righteousness. In the Lord's Supper, we are fed with Jesus' own body and blood. In sending His Son to take on flesh and be our Savior, the Father teaches us that in Jesus we have all that we need. We have clothing: an eternal and stainless robe. We have food: the body and blood of the Son of God Himself who has taken away all of our sins.

So why does Jesus tell us about lilies and birds? Because our faithlessness is always worried about the food and clothing of THIS life. Worried so much, in fact, that we let the cares of this life turn us away from Christ to the things of this world. The reason we love money so much, and want the “stuff” we think we need so much, is that we don't really believe that having Christ means that we have been given everything by our heavenly Father. In other words, we cling to the idols of this world because we think they'll take better care of us than the Lord Himself will!

Well, there's our repentance! What do you do if you get your clothes dirty? They get washed. And if you haven't eaten like you should? Your parents tell you to sit down and have breakfast or some healthy food. In the same way, when we go running after idols, our Lord calls us through His Word back to Himself. He absolves us, forgiving our sins and showing us that our robe is spotless, since it is Jesus' clothing. He brings us to His table, His altar and feeds us again, giving us the food of life and salvation that we need.

Jesus is your clothing--better than any designer label! Jesus is your food, better than anything the fanciest chef can whip up. With such a Jesus, such a Savior, given by such a heavenly Father, you certainly don't need to worry about the other kind of clothing and food either. The Father has given you Jesus! He'll make sure you have everything else you need, too. In the Name of Jesus. Amen.

O Lord, we implore You, let Your continual pity cleanse and defend Your Church, and because she cannot continue in safety without Your help, preserve her evermore by Your help and goodness; through Jesus Christ, Your Son, our Lord , who lives and reigns with You and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. Amen. (Collect for Trinity 15)
