So now faith, hope, and love abide, these three; but the greatest of these is love. (1 Corinthians 13:13)

February 4, 2008 - Monday in the Week of Quinquagesima

When they came, he looked on Eliab and thought, "Surely the Lord's anointed is before him." But the Lord said to Samuel, "Do not look on his appearance or on the height of his stature, because I have rejected him. For the Lord sees not as man sees: man looks on the outward appearance, but the Lord looks on the heart."          (1 Samuel 16:6-7)

February 3, 2008 - Quinquagesima

And taking the twelve, he said to them, "See, we are going up to Jerusalem, and everything that is written about the Son of Man by the prophets will be accomplished. For he will be delivered over to the Gentiles and will be mocked and shamefully treated and spit upon. And after flogging him, they will kill him, and on the third day he will rise."          (Luke 18:31-33)

For the time is coming when people will not endure sound teaching, but having itching ears they will accumulate for themselves teachers to suit their own passions, and will turn away from listening to the truth and wander off into myths.          (2 Timothy 4:3-4)

But as for you, continue in what you have learned and have firmly believed, knowing from whom you learned it and how from childhood you have been acquainted with the sacred writings, which are able to make you wise for salvation through faith in Christ Jesus.          (2 Timothy 3:14-15)

January 30, 2008 - Wednesday in the Week of Sexagesima

You shall not misuse the name of the Lord your God. What does this mean? We should fear and love God so that we do not curse, swear, use satanic arts, lie, or deceive by His name, but call upon it in every trouble, pray, praise, and give thanks.          (2nd Commandment)

January 29, 2008 - Tuesday in the Week of Sexagesima

So to keep me from being too elated by the surpassing greatness of the revelations, a thorn was given me in the flesh, a messenger of Satan to harass me, to keep me from being too elated. Three times I pleaded with the Lord about this, that it should leave me. But he said to me, "My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness." Therefore I will boast all the more gladly of my weaknesses, so that the power of Christ may rest upon me.          (2 Corinthians 12:7-9)

January 28, 2008 - Monday in the Week of Sexagesima

So shall my word be that goes out from my mouth; it shall not return to me empty, but it shall accomplish that which I purpose, and shall succeed in the thing for which I sent it.          (Isaiah 55:11)

January 27, 2008 - Sexagesima

[Jesus] said, "To you it has been given to know the secrets of the kingdom of God.”          (Luke 8:10)

This is why I left you in Crete... [to] appoint elders in every town as I directed you... He must hold firm to the trustworthy word as taught, so that he may be able to give instruction in sound doctrine and also to rebuke those who contradict it.           (Titus 1:5a,c, 9)

“And all who heard him were amazed and said, "Is not this the man who made havoc in Jerusalem of those who called upon this name? And has he not come here for this purpose, to bring them bound before the chief priests?"          (Acts 9:21)

January 24, 2008 - St. Timothy, Pastor and Confessor

"Who then is the faithful and wise servant, whom his master has set over his household, to give them their food at the proper time? Blessed is that servant whom his master will find so doing when he comes.          (Matthew 24:45-46)

January 23, 2008 - Wednesday in the Week of Septuagesima

You shall have no other gods. What does this mean? We should fear, love, and trust in God above all things.          (1st Commandment – Luther’s Small Cathecism)

January 22, 2008 - Tuesday in the Week of Septuagesima

For I want you to know, brothers, that our fathers were all under the cloud, and all passed through the sea, and all were baptized into Moses in the cloud and in the sea, and all ate the same spiritual food, and all drank the same spiritual drink. For they drank from the spiritual Rock that followed them, and the Rock was Christ. Nevertheless, with most of them God was not pleased, for they were overthrown in the wilderness.          (1 Corinthians 10:1-5)

January 21, 2008 - Monday in the Week of Septuagesima

But the people thirsted there for water, and the people grumbled against Moses and said, "Why did you bring us up out of Egypt, to kill us and our children and our livestock with thirst?" (Exodus 17:3)

January 20, 2008 - Septuagesima

“And on receiving it they grumbled at the master of the house, saying, 'These last worked only one hour, and you have made them equal to us who have borne the burden of the day and the scorching heat.' But he replied to one of them, 'Friend, I am doing you no wrong. Did you not agree with me for a denarius? Take what belongs to you and go. I choose to give to this last worker as I give to you. Am I not allowed to do what I choose with what belongs to me? Or do you begrudge my generosity?'        (Matthew 20:1-15)
