You shall not murder. What does this mean? We should fear and love God so that we do not hurt or harm our neighbor in his body, but help and support him in every physical need. (Small Catechism: The Fifth Commandment)
He is risen indeed! Alleluia! In the Name + of Jesus. Amen. All life is a gift. It's from the Father of lights, it's from the Son, who is Light from Light, and it's from the Holy Spirit, who is the Lord and giver of life. From the smallest spark that happens when an embryo is formed until the resurrection of the body on the Last Day--all stages of life truly are gift from the Triune God who created it, sustains it, and will raise it up on the Last Day.
The Son, the Lord Jesus Christ, sent from the Father, was conceived by the Holy Spirit and born of the Virgin Mary. He grew up. He lived. He suffered. He died. By the Holy Spirit, who proceeds from the Father, Jesus raised Himself from the dead, and He is now ascended and seated at the right hand of God the Father Almighty. From thence He will come to judge the living and the dead. He did all of this for your salvation.
Because of Christ's life (zygote to resurrection) all life has been made precious. It's not only precious because God created it, but it's precious because God went through it. He lived it and lived it for you.
So, we cherish life. We defend the weak and the helpless--the unborn, the aged, the sick--because our God was at one point weak and helpless for us. He sustains us in our times of need, and we trust Him confident that He will raise us up on the Last Day just as He Himself did and promises to do for us.
He delivers that to us. He unites us to Himself and His life in the waters of Holy Baptism. He once again gives us the "breath of life" (Genesis 2) in the Word of Absolution (John 20). He sustains us body and soul by giving us of His own Body and Blood to eat and drink.
Your life is precious. Your neighbor's life is precious--from the smallest to the oldest--because Jesus lived, died, and rose again FOR YOU. He is risen indeed! Alleluia! In the Name + of Jesus. Amen.
Now hell, its prince, the devil, Of all their pow'r are shorn; Now I am safe from evil, And sin I laugh to scorn. Grim death with all his might Cannot my soul affright; It is a pow'rless form, Howe'er it rave and storm. (Awake, My Heart, with Gladness, LSB 467:4)
