Today's Reading: Ezekiel 37:1-14
Thus says the Lord Yahweh, "Look, I am the Opener of your graves, and I will cause you to come up from your grave, O My people. Then I will bring you into the land of Israel." (Ezekiel 37:12)
He is risen indeed! Alleluia! In the Name + of Jesus. Amen. Death won't win. It can't win. It must be destroyed. The grave isn't the end. It can't be. It won't be. Your body's last journey isn't funeral home, church, ground. It just won't be. It can't be. Not if Jesus has anything to say about it and don't worry, He does!
It's true. Someday you're going to die. Your heart will run out of beats. One day you will breathe your last. They'll have a funeral for you, and your body will be locked up in a casket and buried beneath six feet of cold, dark dirt. That's reality, that's the truth, but that's not the whole truth.
Yes, even though your body will breathe its last, even though it will be buried in a grave and turn to dust, the whole truth is that Jesus will reform your body from the dust, just as He did first with Adam. He will open your grave, He will breathe life--eternal life--into you, and He will bring you out of your grave to live forever.
That is your sure and certain future. You can trust that it will happen. Jesus will do it. He's already done it! He was dead--stone-cold dead--buried in a stone-sealed stone tomb. Then He was alive again, and an angel opened His grave to show He was already alive. Now He's alive forevermore.
He's already done the same for you. He's made you pass through His death and grave--His watery grave and resurrection of your Baptism into Him. In Jesus you've already died and risen. You'll die with Him, and you'll rise with Him on the Last Day, too. It's already happened. He's done it Himself and done and delivered it for you.
That's your story! Death won't win. Yes, you may die, but you won't stay dead. Your body will be raised up. Jesus rose, and it's His baptismal promise to you. He will keep it, and you'll be in His promised Paradise forever. He is risen indeed! Alleluia! In the Name + of Jesus. Amen.
And so to earth we now entrust What came from dust and turns to dust And from the dust shall rise that day In glorious triumph o'er decay. (The Body in the Grave We Lay, LSB 759:2)
