January 6, 2009 - The Epiphany of Our Lord

Today's Reading: Matthew 2:1-12

Daily Lectionary: Isaiah 66:1-20; Luke 3:21-38

So [the chief priests and scribes] said to [Herod], "In Bethlehem of Judea, for thus it is written by the prophet: 'But you, Bethlehem, in the land of Judah, Are not the least among the rulers of Judah; For out of you shall come a ruler who will shepherd My people Israel' " (Matthew 2:5-6).

In the Name + of Jesus. Amen. The Wise Men were astrologers, "scientists" of the Ancient Near East. The star that appeared indicated to them that a King had been born. But what King? Where? Here we see how the Lord used a star to get their attention! But how would they learn where this King was? From God's Word! It is the Scriptures which tell them where the Christ was to be born.

It is certainly true that the Lord uses various people and events to get people's attention sometimes. But when it comes to the details of salvation––the who, the what and the where––there is no wondering, no doubting, no questions. Rather, the Lord gives a certain and sure answer in His Holy Word.

The Epiphany teaches us that Christ came for all people.––not only Abraham's descendants but also people of every nation. Even for pagan wise men. Even for you and me. But Epiphany also teaches us that the only way we will know this Christ or be able to find Him and worship Him properly is through the Word of the prophets and apostles.

The Scriptures tell us where God is for us. He's in the manger. He's in Bethlehem. He's at the Jordan River. He's on the Mount of Transfiguration. He's before the religious leaders. He's before Pilate. He's on the Cross. He's in the tomb. He's risen. He's in at the font. He’s in the words of your pastor. His Body and Blood are on the altar.

The Word of God teaches us not just where Jesus is in general. They tell us where He is FOR US. Where He is taking our place. Where He is suffering and dying for our sins. Where He is winning our salvation. Where He is delivering His forgiveness, life and salvation.

A star led the Wise Men to the Scriptures. The Scriptures brought them to Jesus. And the Scriptures bring Jesus to you. Let us worship Him now, as the Wise Men did, bringing our offerings of praise and receiving eternal life as His gift to us! In the Name of Jesus. Amen.

Almighty Father, In Your Son You loved us when not yet begun Was this old earth's foundation! Your Son has ransomed us in love To live in Him here and above: This is Your great salvation. Alleluia! Christ the living, To us giving Life forever, Keeps us Yours and fails us never. (LSB 395:4)
