TWELVE Breakaway Audio

The Law, the Gospel . . . and the Rest of Your Life!: The Rev. George Borghardt
The Law shows us our sins. The Gospel delivers to us Jesus, who saves us from our sins. Every Lutheran knows that, right? So, what about the rest of your life? Can the Law and the Gospel tell us what to do after high school? Or who to marry? Or what college to go to? What's the Law and Gospel say about that? Pastor Borghardt serves Zion Evangelical Lutheran Church in McHenry, IL. He is also the Conference Executive for Higher Things.

Sex is for Marriage. Jesus is for sinners.: The Rev. Mark Buetow
Dating? Relationships? Marriage? Boyfriends and girlfriends. Husbands and wives. What does the Bible have to say about all that stuff? We'll see what God's Word has to say about marriage and dating and that thing that only belongs in marriage. Most of all, we’ll see how Christ loves His church as His bride and how that picture helps us to understand all that dating and marriage stuff. Pastor Buetow serves Bethel Lutheran Church in DuQuoin, IL. He is also the Media Executive for Higher Things.

Why the Small Catechism Totally Rocks (and you didn't even know it!): The Rev. Jonathan Fisk
An epic tale told in stick figures, pointy arrows, and one big chiasm! Come and see why that thing you were supposed to have memorized in confirmation class is actually the super-secret manual for understanding everything, or just come to laugh at Pastor Fisk's stick dog (which kind of looks like a cow, except for the tail and stuff). Pastor Fisk serves as Pastor for Youth and Inquiry at Bethany Lutheran Church in Naperville, IL. He is also a member of the Higher Things Board of Directors.

Worthy and Well Prepared: Receiving the Sacrament: The Rev. Peter Gregory
St. Paul warns Christians that eating and drinking the Lord’s Supper “in an unworthy manner” brings judgment. So what do I have to do to be worthy? Does my sin make me unworthy? What if my faith is weak and uncertain? How can I know that the Lord’s Supper will be to my benefit and not to my judgment? We will review Martin Luther’s answer in the Small Catechism and consider what it means to “examine” oneself as proper preparation to receive our Lord’s body and blood. Pastor Gregory serves St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Fort Wayne, IN.

Jesus' Seemingly Stupid Stories: Understanding the Parables: The Rev. Bruce Keseman
A king kills the guests at his son’s big, fat, Hebrew wedding. A farmer won’t let volunteers pull weeds from his field. Vineyard workers kill their boss’ son and then expect to receive the boss’ inheritance. Jesus tells some outrageous stories – and then claims that’s how God’s kingdom works. Join the Parable Guy as we learn how to interpret parables and find out what those strange stories mean for your life. Pastor Keseman serves Christ Our Savior Lutheran Church in Freeburg, IL. He is the Catechist for Twelve-MO, and a former Higher Things Board and staff member.

Learning to Talk as God's Children: The Rev. Kurt Lantz
The words we use in worship and the way they are put to together lead us in conversation and communion with our heavenly Father. Just as children learn to talk by listening to the words of their parents and then repeating them back, so it is in the family of God. Find out what is the history behind these words and how are we taken up into the story of God and His children as we learn to say back to our heavenly Father what He has said to us. Pastor Lantz serves Resurrection Lutheran Church in St. Catharines, ON.

Romans: It's Not Really About You... and That's a Good Thing!: The Rev. Dr. Mike Middendorf
Many believe that, “The great theme of Romans is the sinner's personal justification by faith.” But a close reading of the letter reveals that it is more about community than the individual. Even more importantly, Paul's main emphasis is not upon humanity. Instead, he consistently directs our attention toward God, His righteousness, and the life we have together in our Lord Jesus Christ. Rev. Dr. Middendorf serves as Professor of Theology at Concordia University – Irvine and is writing the Concordia Commentary on Romans for Concordia Publishing House.

Did Jesus Really Rise from the Dead?: The Rev. Mark Pierson
Almost everyone agrees Jesus was crucified. But what happened three days later? Did the disciples steal the body and make up the greatest story ever told? Is this why people say the resurrection accounts contradict each other? Or did the Jews or Romans move the corpse somewhere? Maybe Jesus was really an alien. Perhaps he had a twin brother. Despite the many theories people hide behind to avoid the truth, there are a limited number of options as to what happened that first Easter. Join us as we look at the historical evidence and make a case for the bodily resurrection of Jesus. Rev. Pierson is obtaining a PhD in New Testament studies, co-authoring a book on Lutheran evangelism, and enjoys engaging unbelievers firsthand on the campus of UCLA.

God's Work: Vocation in the Media: The Rev. Samuel Schuldheisz
Ever watched a TV show, like Dirty Jobs or Undercover Boss and thought, that sounds like something I learned in catechism class? There's a word for it: vocation. God calls us to serve him and the neighbor through our vocation, wherever he has placed us. Looking at the Scriptures and some popular television shows, we'll examine God's gift of vocation in our culture. Pastor Schuldheisz serves Redeemer Lutheran Church Huntington Beach, CA.
