Today's Reading: 2 Samuel 22:26-34
With the pure You will show Yourself pure; And with the devious You will show Yourself shrewd. (2 Samuel 22:27)
In the Name + of Jesus. Amen. Most people think God works like karma. If you do something nice, you'll get something nice back. If you are a jerk, well, that'll catch up with you, too. But we also see “good” people suffering and “bad” people getting away with things. It's almost like God actually isn't involved at all or else He's just playing nasty games with the world. But that is to think about God apart from Jesus.
In Jesus, the Lord shows Himself pure to the pure and shrewd to the shrewd. Is Jesus pure? Sinless? Yes. So His Father exalts Him to the highest place and Jesus is above all things. But is Jesus shrewd? With your sins, yes. So the Father gives Him back for that, too, when He suffers and dies on the cross of Calvary.
On the cross, in Jesus, “karma” has its end. The seeming capricious nature of God is done with. In Jesus, all that is good about Him is called yours and all that is rotten about you is called His. On the cross, the perfection and purity of Jesus is counted as yours and the filth and corruption of your sins is put on Him.
In your life now, through your Baptism into Jesus, because Jesus lives in you by His body and blood, you are pure in God's sight. Your impurities are covered up by Jesus. The Old Adam gets what he deserves—a daily drowning in your baptism. The New Man gets what Christ has deserved and earned: eternal life and innocence and blessedness and holiness.
Because you are in Christ, you need never fear “karma” or anything of the sort. Away with superstitions and the notion of “payback.” Instead, your Baptism and the body and blood of Jesus are proof that God has only one thing in mind for you: not to harm you or destroy you but to forgive you and give you eternal life. In the Name of Jesus. Amen.
The sinless Son of God must die in sadness; The sinful child of man may live in gladness; Man forfeited his life and is acquitted; God is committed. (LSB 439:5)
